The Doc Marshalls
03.18.2005 -- Review by: Raymond Martinez{mosimage}Alright, received The Doc Marshalls new album "No Kind of Life" and was a bit skeptical since they are a New York City band. I tell you what, after listening to it for the first time; I had to kick my own ass for being skeptical. First track entitled "Woman Knows No Heartache" pulled me in with a classic honky-tonk jive sound. My favorite track is "No Kind of Life." Nick Beaudoing has written some great songs for this album. He also throws in some great accordion work as well. With the many talents Nick has with singing, songwriting, lead guitar and playing the accordion, you can see why this band has a great sound. But don’t forget Mat Kane with some wicked fiddle playing who is also joined by Henry Hample later in the album. Other members of the band include Terence Murren on bass and Doug Clark on drums. I think also what I liked about this album is they truly sound like a band. Each instrument compliments the others throughout the album. The only thing that I didn’t like, and I didn’t like it because I didn’t know what they were saying, was Track 4 "N’Oublie-Moi Pas, Track 8 "Bon a Rien", and Track 9 "Je Suis Gone." These tracks show the Cajun style flair these guys have. Though I didn’t understand what they were saying (maybe they will put up a translation on their website) the music was great. This band is great and I look forward for their next release.
Time for my rating, as you can tell I dig this album, it’s a keeper. I give it three bottle caps. Hopefully these guys will be down in my hometown since they sound like they would be a great live entertainment showcase. Keep an eye out.
