SXSW – Wednesday Recap

Category : Blog

My anticipation for SXSW seems to always kick into high gear around February, so when I finally get to Austin it’s like a kid in a candy shop for me. Wednesday, the start of the music portion of SXSW, was everything I thought it would be and more. I arrived in Austin around 1PM and started my day off at the Guitartown/Conqueroo party over at Fado’s Irish Pub. I’ve been going to this party for years and somehow it continues to grow. The lists of artists that play this show is mind boggling! It’s 12 hours of straight music from some of the big names in music including: The Silos, Raul Malo, James McMurtry, Scott Miller, Chip Robinson and so many more.

1PM Fado’s
I caught a few shows in the early afternoon including a great set with Bukka Allen (including Gurf Morlix on guitar). I have been a long time fan of Bukka since his B3 Hammond work with Ian Moore back in the Steamboat days. I enjoyed seeing Bukka lead the show as he’s got a great voice.

3PM Paradise
I walked over to a venue called Paradise off of 6th street to catch the Canada band The Deep Dark Woods. These guys were recommended to me from a conversation I had with the Sumner Brothers (another great band up in Canada). I really enjoyed The Deep Dark Woods sound. It’s one to check out on iTunes. The venue was great as well especially with free Rolling Rock ;-)

4PM Opal Devines
PR guru Pigeon O’Brien hosts a showcase every year out at Opals and it’s one that I always look forward too. Pigeon had a great line-up this year and I was able to catch Jimmy Baldwin, porterdavis and Gurf Morlix. I had a chance to talk with Gurf for a bit and learned that he produced the first studio album for the band porterdavis. Prior to this showcase, I’d never heard of porterdavis but this was one of my top bands for Wednesday. porterdavis is a 3 piece roots rock band which took three awards at the Austin Music Awards this year (including best Roots Rock Band and best drummer). Let me just say these guys were fantastic! Following porterdavis, Gurf took the stage which is always a treat.

5PM Paradise
Who hasn’t heard of Justin Townes Earle? It was one year ago that I met Justin out at our showcase at SXSW. I had no clue about his music but let’s just say 2008 was a great year for Justin. He took the music scene by storm with his “Hard Livin’” debut cd. Justin has just released his follow-up album and was down in Austin to spread the word. He put on a great set, the crowd was bumping.

6PM Fado’s
I headed back to Fado’s to catch a few shows and hook up with some friends of mine (Larry & Heather). Larry runs the music blog hickorywind.org and also recently launched a service which we use here on AR called ReviewShine.com. We caught Chip Robinson who lit the stage on fire followed by The Silos (including Jon Dee Graham). The Silos rocked an amazing 45 minute set complete with 3 electric guitars, a keyboard, drums and bass. Jon Dee Graham brought a completly different vibe to the set which I think amazed the band and entire crowd ;-) At the end of the set, I was convinced he was going to light his guitar on fire to cap off the show. It was a memorable set!
After The Silos, we caught one of my favorites Scott Miller perform acoustically in Fado’s. The inside PA system blew up (literally) but Scott did a fantastic job of keeping the crowd engaged. I’m really looking forward to seeing him at our showcase this Friday at Waterloo Ice House.

8PMWaterloo Ice House
To finish off the night, I went over to Waterloo for the Palo Duro Showcase. This is a guarantee’d good time every year. This show included Darryl Lee Rush, Two Tons of Steel, Walt Wilkins and more. The highlight for me was Two Tons of Steel. This shouldn’t suprise anyone as the lead singer is my uncle but let me just say these guys are possessed with the ability to entertain any audience. They are built for live shows and after 13 years of watching them live they somehow continue to get better and literally explode on stage. It was a lot of fun!

So that’s my day for Wednesday! More to come from Thursday’s events.

Ryan Adams and Mandy Moore Wed

Category : Blog

Reports that I usually ignore are flying around that Ryan Adams and Mandy Moore tied the knot in Savannh, Georgia yesterday. The couple engaged last month. That’s the end of my TMZ style reporting although it now makes sense on why two tickets to see Ryan last week in San Antonio was $75. The poor guy needed to pay for a ring. More to come from the retired but still touring singer/songwriter. Congratulations to the couple.

Buddy Miller Recovering

Category : Blog

Buddy Miller was admitted to John Hopkins hospital last Friday in Baltimore with complaints of chest pain following a show with Emmylou Harris, Shawn Colvin and Patty Griffin. They found some signs of a heart blockage which led to triple bypass surgery. Per Buddy’s website he is recooping in the hospital and hopes to be released soon. All of us in the Americana community wish Buddy a speedy recovery. Buddy is the cornerstone of this thing we call Americana!

Message from Buddy’s website:

Following his show in Baltimore last Thursday evening, Buddy Miller was not feeling well. After consulting doctors at Johns Hopkins Hospital, tests revealed some heart blockage. It was determined that surgery was needed right away. He is now resting and recovering and expected to be released from hospital shortly. Buddy and his family would like to thank all for their well wishes and prayers.

Our 4th Annual Showcase Line-up

Category : Blog

For the past three years, I have hosted a showcase during the big music conference/festival known as South By Southwest (SXSW). This show has become bigger than I ever imagined especially after teaming up with the Texas Music site Galleywinter.com last year. We are pleased to announce our 4th Annual AmericanaRoots.com/Galleywinter.com showcase this year on Friday, March 20th. As always, this show is free and requires no wristbands. Our line-up is jam packed with the perfect mixture of Americana and Texas music which is exactly the intent of putting on this show. Without further delay, here is our amazing line-up for this year’s show. We invite you all to come out and sample some great Texas/Americana music. Most of these bands rarely even play Texas so it’s a real treat for me personally to have them play!

6PM Two Tons of Steel
7PM Jason Eady / The Doc Marshalls (Nick Beaudoing)
8PM Wrinkle Neck Mules
9PM Scott Miller
10PM Modern Day Drifters
11PM Josh Grider Trio

ar2009-1

RSVP on Facebook if you plan to come out!

These shows would never have been possible without the great help of Waterloo Ice House, Laura Magoon and Angela Lampton. Angela recommended that I put together our first showcase four years ago and the rest is history. Laura is the general manager of Waterloo and does a fantastic job of taking care of the bands and I during our jam packed show. In addition, these shows would be nothing without all of these great musicians.

Evan Phillips Benefit Project — The Whipsaws

Category : Blog

Ever since we had The Whipsaws out to our showcase last year, I’ve become a huge fan of the band’s work. This Anchorage, Alaska band is amazing and their album held on the Top 10 of MilesOfMusic.com best selling albums for most of last year. We made attempts to have the band come back out again this year to our annual show in Austin but that’s when we learned that front man, Evan Phillips, was unavailable due to medical issues. I wasn’t sure what that meant at the time but read a few band newsletters over the past few months which kept referring to his medical issues. I happened onto Evan’s Myspace page tonight which had a little more detail around the issue. Medical issues and musicians never mixed due to most musicians having no access to medical insurance combined with the fact that when you aren’t touring, you aren’t making money.

A benefit album is in the works to help Evan’s mounting bills along with a PayPal account which has been established to help out. The album will feature songs from Tim Easton, Leeroy Stagger, Marty Jones, Two Cow Garage, Cory Branan, Spiff Chambers, Matt Hopper, Wrinkle Neck Mules, Shurman, Aaron Lee Tasjan, Mike D. Damron, and Tamara Nil. This will be one hell of a collection of music but until then I’d ask that you donate a few bucks to help offset the bills if you can afford to.

From all of us here on AmericanaRoots.com, we wish Evan a speedy recovery so that he can get back to the music. The Whipsaw’s 60 Watt Avenue was one of my favorite albums of last year, so as a fan I am excited to see what is in store for the band’s future cd’s.

Thanks,
Gregg Geil

evan

Many of you now know, Evan has been battling a climbing injury he sustained seven years ago which has caused him a great deal of pain. With recent trips to meet with surgeons and specialist in Philadelphia and Nashville, Evan finally has what seems to be an accurate diagnosis and will hopefully be having surgery sometime in soon.

As is the case for many professional musicians, Evan does not have health insurance. Many folks have already been very supportive, making donations to help him with the cost of his surgery, which will be around $10,000. Also, many of The Whipsaws & Evan’s musician friends have come together to record and release a “Benefit” album with songs written by Evan! This album will be released sometime in April, and some of the artists featured include:

Tim Easton, Leeroy Stagger, Marty Jones, Two Cow Garage, Cory Branan, Spiff Chambers, Matt Hopper, Wrinkle Neck Mules, Shurman, Aaron Lee Tasjan, Mike D. Damron, and Tamara Nile

There is also an Anchorage “Benefit Show” in the work for Evan in April, featuring Alaskan musicians…so stay tuned for details! In the meantime, if anyone feels inclined to make a donation directly to Evan..you can do so by clicking on the link below.

Quote from Evan on his Myspace page:
Hey friends…it’s been a while so i wanted to give a heads up on what is happening in my ‘hip’ world.
So I returned home from Philadelphia and Nashville on February 2. I had to go get some x-rays, and then track down and collect all my records and previous imaging tests (ct scans, MRI, etc) from 2003-2005 concerning this injury. All of this was then mailed to Dr. Byrd (hip surgeon) in Nashville. They told me that it will take them 10-12 weeks to “review my case”. I know, it seems a bit long, considering i’ve just spent 7 years living with what could basically be described as a disability. Whatever…anyway, i’m trying to pull some strings to make this happen quicker. I’ll keep you all in the loop.

I’ve got some good news though:
1. My pain is way more under control than it was over the last few months. i’ve been getting out and doing social things which has been nice.

2. A non-profit musicians assistance foundation in the U.S. is going to help pay some of my surgery costs. This takes a huge load of anxiety off my shoulders.

3. i’ve got about $700 in a pay pal account that people have donated for the surgery.

4. My friends around the country are recording a benefit cd of my songs to help me raise money. Some artists included: Tim Easton, Aaron Lee Tasjan, Matt Hopper, Leeroy Stagger, Tamara Nile, Shurman, Wrinkle Neck Mules, Two Cow Garage, Mike Damron, Cory Branan, Spiff Chambers, and Marty Jones.

Hopefully this will be out in April…

Anyway, right now i’m just really having to be patient. i’m starting to play guitar and write music more which is pretty inspiring. i’m thinking about the possibility of even playing an intimate acoustic show in the next month or so…we’ll see.

Anyway, take care and thanks for being there and being supportive. It has helped me…ALOT!

Take Care,
evan

Help Us Define A New Kind Of Radio

Category : Blog

I just wrapped up a nice, week long vacation which gave me some time to ponder a bit around music. I’ve hit a lull of sorts after deciding to pull our radio station a few months ago. For those that are new to the site, we (Ray Randall and I) ran a 24/7 Internet Radio station here on AmericanaRoots.com for the past 3-4 years. Each Sunday, we would rally up our favorite new tracks of the week combined with our fancy Radio Scheduling software and knock out a week’s worth of playlists for rotation. It is and was something we both throughly enjoyed however as I have mentioned before it accounted for 75% of our month expenses and netted us around 10% of our actual traffic. Back to my vacation though, I started to ponder how to create a radio service which would really connect with people while at the same time allowing us to rotate in new artists we felt match our sound. Ultimately, this is the same question across all of radio land (not just here).

A Little Background of Radio
Radio has changed so much over the past two years with the birth of stations like random format stations like “Jack” & “Bob” coupled with the insane growth of iPods mixed in with Satellite radio. The idea of playlists and scheduling really harp back to an the past era of radio. In radio, you generally schedule music to a “clockwheel” which generally consists of categories which will make up one hour of music. For example, you may spin 40% Big Hits, 20% Medium Hits & 40% Classic Songs in one hour of radio airplay. This gives you an prelimanary way to define your stations sounds. The music director (in our case Ray and I) would define tracks into these categories (we had many more but for simplicity sakes I’ve only included 3 categories). Each week, we would add a few tracks to Big Hits and remove an equal amount.
There are a host of radio promoters that we work with on a weekly basis plus dozens of artists which call me each week to alert me of new music. The challenge for us as music directors is really around listening to hundreds of songs each week and deciding which 2-3 would make it for that week. No easy task to say the least, especially when your talking about the ungenre genre — Americana. It’s often difficult to define a sound of the station or a theme because our genre is so vast. This vastness is a good thing however, regular radio normally has some kind of underlying theme which is tough to manage.

This brings me back to my pondering during vacation…the future of radio and more importantly (at least for me) the future of AmericanaRoots.com Radio.

I have an experimental concept which I’d like to try however it requires some user interaction which is often hard to come by, so I need some volunteers. Here’s the early concept in a nutshell and I’ve tentatively named this concept the “Ameri-a-Matic Radio”

What is Ameri-a-Matic Radio?
Ameri-A-Matic combines technology with a large catalog of music to build a daily playlist defined by an artist song.

This may sound confusing, so let me elaborate a bit. Each week, we will ask you (the readers) to provide us a name of an artist and one of their songs to be the theme of each day of that week. We will use technology (a combination of BPM,Mood,Sound and Relatability) to build a playlist off of that one song per day. For example, if you choose Robert Earl Keen’s song “Road Goes On Forever”, we will plug this into our software and build a playlist of songs which are compaitible to that song. Think of it as a Pandora type radio station, however you define the song for that day. This will differ from Pandora in that we will mix in a small sample of new americana tracks to help support the new music which comes out each and every day.

So before I go out and spend days/weeks trying to put together this elaborate system, I would love to get some feedback on if you would be willing to offer up some of your favorite Americana Tracks to help get us started. All we need is for you to name one Artist and song which you’d like to start with. As we progress, we’ll ask for more.

My apologies for the very wordy post, however I haven’t written in weeks so…

The Americana Spotlight v4 – Big House

Category : Podcasts, The Americana Spotlight

Join host Gregg Geil as he interviews Monty Byrom & David Neuhauser from the band Big House. Big House is a Bakersfield, California based band made up six musicians: Monty, David, Sonny, Tenner, Ron and Chuck. The band found popularity out in California in the mid 90’s which led them to Nashville in 1997 with an MCA Nashville record deal. Big House released two albums on MCA which led to a few hits on Billboard’s Country Chart. Two albums into the MCA deal, the band broke up. Ten year’s later, they have reunited with a new album entitled “Never Ending Train” which was released in late 2008. You can find more information about the band on http://www.bighouserecords.com.

The iTunes Killa – Spotify.com

Category : Blog

One of my own goals of 2009 is to cover more news about the music industry as it changes each and every day. I am first and foremost a fan of music and with that comes the constant challenge of “Where do I find my music?”. We have the luxury here at Roots headquarters to get new CD’s in each and every day however CD’s are a dying breed. For musicians don’t worry, CD’s are built for live shows. That won’t change as audiences love taking away something tangible from a show. Take note of the latest figures from music sales in 2008. While digital sales were up 10.5% in 2008, CD sales dropped 20%. In 2008, we had a big causality in the Americana scene with the loss of MilesOfMusic.com which was a staple online CD store for Americana. It’s a clear sign of the shift in the consumption of music.

AmoebaWith physical cd’s sales dropping like a rock, the trend is clear as it has moved to digital sales. In general, this is a VERY bad thing for Americana Music. The issue is now artists have lost premier cd shelf space in your local cd shop and must rely on the mammoth online sales venues to get some notice. Getting notice is near impossible as discovering new music online is often like finding a needle in a haystack unless you know exactly what your looking for. iTunes is the dominant site for digital music sales however Amazon.com, eMusic and Walmart have slices of the pie online. The problem with online music is dependence on the platform from which you buy. iTunes is notorious for it’s DRM (digital rights management) which prevents you from using any other player than an iPod however in 2008, the rolled out a lot more artists as iTunes Plus music (which means this will play on any mp3 player). Amazon.com is completely DRM free which is great but their software to browse the site is horrid. This brings me to the point of the whole article — Spotify.com

Picture 1.pngOver the past few days there has been a tremendous amount of buzz around a new site called Spotify.com. Spotify is an online system which allows you to pull in music from there servers and build your own streaming playlists. While this may not sound great, it truly is. The interface is fast, vast and simple. The sound quality is absolutely crystal clear. Their music catalog is extremely deep. Overall, Spotify.com is one hell of a setup. The problem? It’s not available in the USA yet. Spotify has a large amount of work to do to handle the licensing issues, however as it stands right now you may never need to “download” a song again with this great setup.

How does this impact the Americana Music artists? In my humble opinion, it will help. Here’s my theory which may be completely wrong but I’ll let the artists speak up. Americana Musicians make no money on digital sales today. They make all of their money at live shows. Which is why the majority of artists have no issues giving their music away for free to gain fans which in the end directly impacts their show revenues. Spotify’s system makes it very easy to sample all kinds of music. Their goal is to have advertising offset the licensing so in the end musicians will get paid. The freedom to listen to full cd’s will directly help all Americana musicians.

Time will tell how Spotify impacts the industry. This could be a real powerhouse that defines the future of music. To be continued.
