Nolan McKelvey- A Matter Of Time

Category : Blog

Our Americanaroots Podman of the Board Von recently turned me on to a couple new artists on his show Americana Rock Mix.  One was Nolan McKelvey.  Von played a couple of tunes from his 2009 album A Matter Of Time and I had to hear more, so I got my ears on a copy of the whole disc.  Nolan spent time with among others, the Boston based band The Benders but is now on his own and calls Flagstaff Arizona home.

What draws me to his music is Nolan’s voice.  It has something extra to it;  a certain inflection or geographically unrecognizable twang that would let him fit in playing in Boston, or Texas, or Tennessee, and apparently Arizona! His voice really shines on the tune Fireflies. Nolan’s tunes on the disc are a mix of softer ballads (The Best Is Yet To Come) and  lively head-bopping tunes with more hook to them than most of the Americana I’ve listened to lately. The disc opens with the catchy tune All We Ever Needed, which “caught” me right away. Other standouts include Entwined; Song of Hope, Song of Joy; and the closer Regarding Proposition (H)8.

Folk on the disc include Nolan, guitar, vocals; Tim Hogan, bass and vocals; Jeff Lusby, electric and acoustic guitars, organ, vocals; Ethan Rea, drums; and Mike Sweitz on Wurlitzer, Organ and Rhodes. This is an excellent disc by a seasoned singer, songwriter and performer.  I certainly look forward to following his career and look forward to any future releases by Nolan. Check him out!

Diana Catherine and the Thrusty Tweeters

Category : Blog, Music

Missed this one last year, but better late…. The Spirit Ranch Sessions by Diana Catherine and the Thrusty Tweeters; now this disc I flat out love!  Many things fall under our Americana umbrella,  but this is my favorite combination of ingredients.  Great songwriting,  killer voice, and some great energetic music with an electric touch (and killer band name!)  I love tons of great acoustic music, but there is just something about a plugged in electric guitar!

You may not have heard of this bunch, as they just got together in 2008 as  “a family of travelin’ misfit, musical gypsies who always bring a party to town.”  In their short existence the Toronto bunch have toured extensively across their native Canada playing what has been described as “Northern” Americana.  (I like the term Canadiana better myself!)  The band consists of Diana (Catherine) DiGiovanni) who wrote the tunes and provides lead vocals, guitars and harmonica;  Matt Blackie, drums;  Nic DiSanto, bass;  and Kevin Robinson, guitars.

The disc is full of great lively stuff, no snoozers here.  Highlights include the opener, Walk,  as well as TravelinManSober (Is Too Hard to Stay) and 4 Leaf Clover.   The glue that holds it all together is the powerful Sarah Borges type expressive voice of Diana.  Diana and band remind me a bit of Grace Potter and the Nocturnals.  Similarly, Diana is the face of the group but her band was certainly not an afterthought and she relies on them for stellar support.  My rating: 5 Molsons!!

My Addiction To NYC Americana

Category : Blog

If you have followed the site for some time, you may have picked up my slight addiction to Americana music out of New York City area.  One of those artists, Joe Whyte, has a big gig coming up this week which I wanted to plug here on the site. If you are around that area, do drop in as they say.

*For Immediate Release*
NYC Americana/Alt-Country artist JOE WHYTE performs a special one-off full-band show at Rockwood Music Hall on Tuesday, January 12, 2010.  The night will feature fan favorites off his critically acclaimed album “Devil in the Details” alongside brand-new songs from the follow-up album he is getting ready to record.

Joe’s band consists of some of Americana’s best musicians: Cat Popper(Grace Potter, Ryan Adams) on bass, Rob Heath (Kevin Kinney, Jill Sobule) on drums and Dan Marcus (Crescent & Frost, Anna Egge) on guitar.

http://www.myspace.com/joewhyte

Joe Whyte’s songs have been described as “alt-country pearls that shimmer with simplicity and effectiveness” and “beautifully crafted, melancholic Americana.” His vocal delivery, storytelling, and confessional lyrics convey a sense of urgency not typically seen in today’s music industry. Joe is currently finishing material for a follow-up to 2007’s critically-acclaimed album, Devil in the Details, which received 4 Stars from Maverick, was named to Americana Roots’ Best of 2007 List and was
predicted to “make history” by Rootsville.

Recently, he has opened a sold-out show for Rosanne Cash, as well as playing 2 shows in Nashville for CMA Fest, including one in the plaza of the Ryman Auditorium. He also showcased during the Americana Music Festival in September. Over the years he’s also played in the US and Europe with such acts as Steve Forbert, Slaid Cleaves and Josh Ritter to name a few.
