LIST OF ALL LISTS – YEAR AND DECADE IN REVIEW

Category : Blog, Features

As we approach the end of yet another great year in music, you have undoubtedly seen one or two year end best of lists. The “Bird List” posted previously here as compiled by several different web sites is one of the best in my opinion. There are some years I would have trouble coming up with 10 good ones, but this year was thankfully quite bountiful.

Here is my own top 20 for 2009.

  1. Todd Snider – The Excitement Plan
  2. Band of Heathens – One Foot in the Ether
  3. Scott Miller – For Crying Out Loud
  4. Corb Lund – Losin Lately Gambler
  5. Jason Eady – When The Money’s All Gone
  6. Malcomb Holcombe – For The Mission Baby
  7. Justin Earle – Midnight at the Movies
  8. Guy Clark – Somedays The Songs Write You
  9. Kris Kristofferson – Closer To The Bone
  10. James Hand – Shadow on the Ground
  11. Ryan Bingham – Roadhouse Sun
  12. Chris Smither – Time Stands Still
  13. Slaid Cleaves – Everything You Love Will Be Taken Away
  14. Dailey & Vincent – Brothers From Different Mothers
  15. Lyle Lovett – Natural Forces
  16. Delbert McClinton – Acquired Taste
  17. The Avett Brothers – I and Love and You
  18. Chris Knight – Trailer II
  19. Drew Kennedy – An Audio Guide To Cross Country Travel
  20. Hurricane Doyle – Death of Me

Now with 2009 behind us, we enter into a new decade as well. Trying to look back a decade is nearly impossible for someone like me who has trouble remembering yesterday, but I thought I would give it a shot.

First, doing some research online, the Americana Music Awards did not begin until 2002. So, we have made at least one huge stride during this decade to at least acknowledge the genre. Here is a list of some award recipients as awarded by Americana since 2002:

2002 – Album of the Year – Buddy & Julie Miller – Buddy & Julie Miller

2002 – Song of the Year – She’s Looking At Me – Jim Lauderdale

2002 – Artist of the Year – Jim Lauderdale

2003 – Artist of the Year – Johnny Cash

2004 – Album of the Year – Van Lear Rose – Loretta Lynn

2004 Song of the Year – Fate’s Right Hand – Rodney Crowell

2006 – New Emerging Artist – The Greencards

2008 – Song of the Year – She Left Me For Jesus – written by Brian Keane and Hayes Carll, performed by Hayes Carll

2008 – Artist of the Year – Levon Helm

2008 – New Emerging Artist – Mike Farris

2009 – Album of the Year – Written In Chalk – Buddy & Julie Miller

2009 – Song of the Year – Chalk – written by Julie Miller, performed by Buddy & Julie Miller

2009 – Artist of the Year – Buddy Miller

2009 – New Emerging Artist – Justin Earle

That was a very impressive list, especially the new emerging acts during the decade. We have certainly been blessed with growth within the Americana genre. In my opinion, this is more due to the continuing leap from traditional country music. One quick turn of any radio dial will tell you all you need to know. Today’s country music is nothing more than pop. Even legendary George Jones recently stated his disgust, saying they need to come up with their own genre because this is not country music any longer.

Trying to put together a top list of releases for the decade is nearly impossible. However, thanks to some help from the guys over at the9513.com, plus some research on my own, here is a list I put together. I welcome any suggestions from others so please let me know what I left out.

1. Fair & Square – John Prine

2. Georgia Hard – Robbie Fulks

3. O’Brother Where Art Thou – Various

4. American IV – Johnny Cash

5. Coal – Kathy Mattea

6. Dirt Farmer – Levon Helm

50. Van Lear Rose – Loretta Lynn

Well, that about raps it up. When you look back at the list I have put together, plus those I am sure I left out, there are lots of essentials for any music lover. So save up your money, build some more storage and prepare for the next decade.

What would I like to see this decade?

  1. The top of my wish list has long been a bluegrass record by Dwight Yoakam. That would be stellar. Throw in a duet with he and Alison Krauss, and you have something very special.

  1. Justin Earle to hook up with T Bone Burnett as producer for a new record.

  1. I was disappointed with the Steve Earle release this year as a tribute to Townes Van Zandt. While I love Townes, and applaud Steve getting his music out there for a new generation, the final product let me down. With all of that said, I would love to see a tribute CD to Blaze Foley. Allow Prine, Lovett, Crowell, and some of the other great Texas artists to put it together.

  1. More new music from Billy Joe Shaver. He is a living legend.

  1. Finally….this one is a bit more personal….I would like to see continued growth and support not only for our site…but for those who promote real music. There are so many great artists out there who deserve recognition and support. It is sites or blogs such as ours I hope contributes at least a little to help these talents to continue.

Thanks everyone and I hope you all have a safe holiday and great New Year. I look forward to comments from others on my lists. Feel free to yell at me if you wish….I may deserve it.

Ryan Bingham – Golden Globe Nod

Category : Blog

Ryan BinghamRyan Bingham scores a Golden Globe nomination for his work on the track “The Weary Kind” which has turned into the core track of Jeff Bridge’s new movie “Crazy Heart”.   The song was co-written with Bingham by the movie’s producer, T Bone Burnett. It sure is great to see Bingham get some much deserved fanfair outside of our little world.  Pretty soon, I’ll be saying I knew him when… The magazine New York Entertainment has an interview up with Bingham here. Ryan and the band (The Dead Horses) even make a cameo in the new flick.

The Sociology of Live Music

Category : Blog

The Sociology of Live Music

Over the years, I have become a bit of an expert in understanding a live audience. There are so many intangibles when you go to a live show which all flows into the full live experience.  For most, live music is a social event.  For me, live music is about by the artist.  Those two don’t always flow together nicely.  Nonetheless, a live show is pretty magical if you think about.  With our shared experiences, I have set forth the goal in building the standard in Live Music Socioligy which will be a working document. I encourage you to classify new types below in the comments section which I will add to this living document.  It is our duty to identify these categories so that people are educated and informed. Now beforeI begin, I want to make clear that we all tend to pass through these categories at one time or another.  Knowledge, however, may help you to understand the signs before attempting to taste the life of the following groups:

Drink Beer
The Pre-Show Drunk
You know em, you love him. It’s the guy (in most cases) that is drunk before the show even starts.  This guy starts lubin’ up at 5PM and by 10:30 is completely sauced out of his mind. I would hesitate to say that we have all been there once before but on the other side it’s pretty entertaining to watch.  No one wants to be around this guy, however there is a certain circus like feel to watching what he does.  Everyone in the venue knows how this is going to end except for him. Thirty minutes into the show, this guy is typically passed out to which all of his entourage ends up on babysitting duty. During these thirty minutes, this somewhat vertical person can (and likely will) turn to Heckling the artist, the bar staff or anyone in his general vicinity.

The New Couple
Ah, the new couple.  These two have just started dating and he thought it would be a great idea to bring her out to a packed house for a night of music.  Their age can vary but typically falls into the range of 20-50.  In their undying love of 24 hours, they feel it is necessary to let everyone in the venue how. They could care less about the music, it’s all about each other, for now anyway. They dance and kiss the night away oblivious to hundreds watching. I often wonder why you even bother to pay the $20 per ticket?

The Larrys
Every guy has been a part of The Larrys at one time or another. This is the group of guys that come for the view but still enjoy the music.  They sing along with the music however internally they have a pacman like game going on in their head.  The more girls they can spot in the venue, the more points they get. The Larry’s generate around 23.2% of the talking through the show.

The Mollies

The Mollies
Every girl has been a part of The Mollies. There is one in the group that will say let’s go see a show.  The rest in the group say this is the best idea ever without even knowing who the musician. Their goal is to be noticed.  This goal can be reach by either making a scene, crying or parting the crowd at least a dozen times throughout the 2 hour show.  The Mollies make up for at least 32.5% of all talking through the show.

The Innocent
This group of folks are equally represented on both sides of gender.  The Innocent don’t make their presence known till at least half way into the show when a cop or bouncer will escort them out of the club. That long walk out the club will consist of multiples “What did I do??”.  Their offense spreads the spectrum but is known to include dancing on tables (next to the DO NOT GET ON TABLES sign), fighting, biting, spitting and yelling. It should be noted that there are often early warning signs of this group which can start as The Pre-Show drunk category but not always.

The Second Stringers
Not a lot of love is ever given to The Sound Guy. His sole purpose in life is to provide us the best possible sound given the equipment he has at hand. However, The Second Stringers is a group which is devoted to giving constant feedback to that lone Sound Guy in the back. This category was raised by Kevin (@HighDesertMusic).

The OneTuners
This can be a subgroup of any of the above or a category of their own. They are the ones who come to the show but only know ‘onetune’. They have to show that they do know a tune by going absolutely b-zerk when that tune is played live. (submitted by Don Z)

The Literally Unwashed Masses aka TLUM
TLUM are comprised of hippes, steam-punks, dead-heads, etc who couldn’t bother to clean up (just a little) before going in public (let alone to a large gathering of people). (submitted by Wevo)

Drew Kennedy AAGTCCT or How I Learned To Love Travel Songs

Category : Blog, Music, Reviews

My first run in with Drew Kennedy was out at our 2008 showcase during SXSW.  I was vaugely familiar with his music but became a fan right before he even went on stage.  Brad (Galleywinter) introduced me to Drew shortly before he took the stage.  Drew went off about this massive wreck on I35 in which a semi truck full of Pinantas had overturned which he coined “The Pianata Massacre”.  The story and subsequent performance engrained the New Braunfels, Texas songwriter into one of my favorites around these parts.

In 2009, Drew released a new CD called “An Audio Guide to Cross Country Travel”. This album is has a sharply different feel from his previous work.  While this CD title might take the Guiness Book of World Records for the longest title, the key is that it delivers song after song.

An Audio Guide To Cross Country Travel

An Audio Guide To Cross Country Travel

When I think about Americana type music, songs typically falls into one of three categories: Lovin’, Drinking or Traveling.  My own personal tastes typically steer away from the “being away from home” songs as I don’t always identify with non-stop life on the road. That being said,  Drew’s collection of stories from the road stuck with me almost instantly.  These stories had a different feel with an upbeat love of life and travel.  It captures Drew’s humor of life and unique ability to capture the little things that make life work.

This CD made my own personal Top 10 of 2009 and I would encourage everyone to pick up a copy and get out to catch one of his live shows.  Drew and Austin Collins are wrapping up a tour. Drew will be playing the first annual “Merry Folking Christmas” on 12/21 in Gruene, Texas.

Song Recommendations:

  • Buzzing Like A Wire
  • Room #27
  • Rolling Around In The Bed

Bonus Video — As I was perusing Drew Kennedy’s site, I noticed he and Austin Collins (another favorite Texas songwriter of mine) produced a strange and funny video of a center off of I95 called “South of the Border”.  Enjoy..

Doop & the Inside Outlaws- Evertt Belcher

Category : Blog

everettIf you’ve been hangin’ around AmericanaRoots for some time then you have heard of Doop & the Inside Outlaws, whether it be hearing them on one of our podcasts or reading our review of Doop’s last disc Blood River. We’re happy to say Doop is back with another helping of his brand of Rust-Belt Americana on his new disc Everett Belcher.  It is definitely a late entry into my top 10 of 2009 list!.

The Inside Outlaws is a group of singer-songwriters and musicians based loosely out of the Downriver area of Detroit (my hometown) whose goal is to find and develop talented singer-songwriters. One of these is Don “Doop” Duprie. His bio reads;

“Born and raised in the industrial enclave of River Rouge, MI, this son of an auto mechanic and an Avon lady learned early on that hard work and doing the right thing always provided for his family. A veteran firefighter, Doop now conveys that same work ethic and honesty in all aspects of his musical career as a full-time singer/songwriter signed to a publishing deal with Nashville based Highland Publishing. He now divides his time between the two music cities.”

doop Now to the new disc. The title track is an excellent one, about an old moonshine runner.  Even with jobs as scarce as they are in Detroit, Doop takes a jab at one in MFNJOB. He’s too rockin’ to call strictly country, but too country to call rock’n'roll.  He’s a great mix of it all.  He even adds a great cover of Springsteen’s tune Prove It All Night.

We have had so much great music come out of Detroit.  I think hands down the best songwriter we now have to offer the Americana World is Don “Doop” Duprie. Check him out!

Top 20 of 2009 as Voted by Americana Music Blogs

Category : Blog

This year, Matt over at the blog A Truer Sound came up with a great idea to combine Top 20 lists from 30+ Americana/Alt.Country/Whatever music blogs into one giant masterpiece called “The Bird List”.  We here at Americana Roots were proud to be a part of this salute to great music over 2009.  All of the blogs who participated are releasing their list today.  My sincere thanks to Matt and all of the blogs for pulling this uneasy feat together!

The Bird List. A bird’s eye view of the combined top 20 lists of what we like to call a “loose confederation of like minded bloggers”. This is the inaugural year. It’s been a patchy one!
