NEW ARTIST WATCH – BRAD BLUME

Category : Music, Reviews

Brad Blume has released a CD sampler which I recently got an opportunity to enjoy very much. The self titled release includes 3 songs written by Brad in hopes of gaining attention from the music industry.brad-blume

“I’ve written over a dozen songs of which I am proud,” states Blume. “These are my first 3 studio recordings. I did the sampler because I was advised from a few people I know who make their living in music to start with no more than 3 songs to try and garner attention in the music world. I worked with producer/arranger Jeff Halpern and put together the best players we could in the studio.”

The results are a very enjoyable mix that highlights his talents. The first song titled “Poor Depressed Me” allows Blume to display his country charm, while having fun doing so. Planting his tongue firmly in cheek, Blume paints the lonesome picture of lost love, in a way all his own. The steel guitar and backing vocals add to the enjoyment.

The second song, “Stray Bullet,” is a country ballad which highlights Blume’s vocal talents. His vocals will certainly remind many of James Taylor, one of his favorites for sure.

“As a guy raised in NJ and now living in NYC, I grew up mostly with the music of the 70’s singer/songwriters who I still listen to such as Dan Fogelberg, James Taylor, John Denver, Jim Croce, Neil Young etc,” states Blume. “Later on, I was introduced to the music of Dwight Yoakam by my step-father and listened to Dwight’s album “This Time” over and over. I really loved it and from there started to listen to country legends such as Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, and George Jones. Recently I have gotten into Warren Zevon who I feel is a real master songwriter.”

If there were any doubts to the impact Taylor had on Blume, the final cut titled “Lap Dance Lullaby” would fit like a glove into Taylor’s catalog. The vocal inflections, rhythm, and overall vibe are very similar to Taylor, which in this case is a good thing. It is one thing to attempt to do it, but when you do it well like Blume does here, it adds to the appeal.

“I am presently working with a director on a music video for “Lap Dance Lullaby” (a favorite so far amongst the ladies) which I hope to have finished in the next couple of months,” states Blume.

Keep your eyes out for the follow up for Blume. “I also have several more songs to record and would love to get a record or publishing company’s support if possible. If not, I will self produce in the studio again which I then will release in 2010.”

ONE YOU NEED TO CHECK OUT…WILL SCOTT – GNAWBONE

Category : Music, Reviews

One of the many reasons I wanted to write for Americana Roots was to spread the word on music I thought deserved more praise and recognition. There is so much great music out there that many of us unfortunately never get a chance to hear and enjoy. I recently received one of these true gems, and felt compelled to tell others right away.

Will Scott’s debut release titled “Gnawbone” will catch your attention immediately with its hard driving soulful depth. The mixture of classic rock, blues, and even folk, permeate through to deliver a tantalizing CD. Drawing from a variety of musical influences such as Junior Kimbrough, Tony Joe White, Townes Van Zandt, and Tom Petty among others, Scott has the unique ability to deliver a song vocally with the soul and passion that drives a song home. His vocal presence is astounding.will-scott

Scott additionally writes or co-writes all 12 songs on the CD along with producer Christopher “Preacher Boy” Watkins, with the exception of “Amen Corner,” which was also co-written by Christian Gibbs. Preacher Boy also fills in admirably on several other instruments throughout the record. There is a great supporting cast here as well including background vocals by Jan Bell (The Maybelles), Jolie Holland, and Samantha Parton (The Be Good Tanyas), Joe Magistro does a great job on drums, Jim Whitney provides a thundering rhythm on bass, and Harvey “Slippery” Jenkins on banjo.

The CD opens with two songs that display his close ties to the state of Indiana, where he spent his youth growing up. “Jack’s Defeat Creek” has almost a Doors feel to it, with the supporting mesmerizing keyboard of Preacher Boy. I defy you to not begin tapping your toes in rhythm immediately…and when Scott’s deep vocals kick in it truly hits you squarely. The title cut, “Gnawbone,” opens with a primal drum beat and bass, which cascades into a driving song that will keep you moving.

“Jack’s Defeat Creek takes its name from a very small town in southern Indiana,” states Scott. “It is based loosely on one of the folk legends of how the town got its name. As the story goes, the two lovers get separated by the flooded creek. I always liked old stories such as that, and decided to write a song about it.”

Scott continued to tell me about the title cut. “Gnawbone was inspired by a dream I had of my paternal grandfather in a pumpkin patch in a small town called Normal, Indiana. As the song came together, Preacher Boy and I changed the route a bit to Gnawbone. You have got to love the grit of a town called that.”

Additional highlights here include the funky “Make Her Love Me,” the melodic “Lazy Summertime” and “Louisiana Lullaby,” which allow Scott’s vocals to roll freely, “Mother May I,” where Scott conjures great memories of Stevie Ray Vaughn, and “Stain Lifter,” that certainly has the feel of Townes and Junior Kimbrough.

Scott is already busy working on a follow up to his initial release. “I just returned from a 3 week tour of the UK, including a great gig at The Glastonbury Festival. I am getting ready to leave for the west coast for a short 2 week tour, and then head back home to New York for a release event hopefully in August. I have been busy continuing to write as well as promote this release. So, all is going very well.”

It is music such as this that I truly enjoy. You can instantly hear the depth and passion within the music, plus the amazing vocals don’t hurt either. Do yourself a favor, and check Will out….and then let me know what you think. You can thank me later.gnawbonecover

Junior Brown Warning!!

Category : Blog

Junior Brown fans have the opportunity to see the Guit-Steel master in one of the smallest venues you’ll likely ever be able to see him in this Friday, July 31.

Junior Brown and very special guests, Detroit’s Deadstring Brothers will be at one of my favorite venues, Callahan’s in Auburn Hills, Michigan (home of the Detroit Pistons home venue the Palace of Auburn Hills). This show would be well worth it for the Deadstring Brothers alone!

They also have bluesman Jimmy Thackery on the bill on Thursday night July 30.

For information you can check out Callahan’s website at www.atcallahans.com

See you there!!

Will Quinlan & The Diviners- Navasota

Category : Music, Reviews

nav_cover_2_4web I’ve got such a big stack of great music to listen to and review here that I think I’m going to need to take a couple of weeks off!  One of the great cds I’ve been trying to get to is the new cd Navasota by Tampa’s Will Quinlan and his new band The Diviners.  This band was formed with bits and pieces of his previous two bands, Pagan Saints and Murder Creek.  The title of the disc is a reference to his beloved late mother’s East Texas hometown.

Americana is a loosely defined term and probably means different things to different people.  To me this disc is about as pure Americana as it gets.  It is a great collection of catchy tunes with Byrds style jangly guitars as well as his co-producer Steve Connelly’s work on guitar, mandolin, dobro and pedal steel. Add drums, bass and harmonica as well as Quinlan’s lead vocals and you’ve got great Americana.  Often harmony vocals leave me wishing the band had just gone with one vocalist.  The voices just don’t complement each other and add to the song.  Such is certainly NOT the case with this disc.  Rebekah Pulley adds some of the nicest harmony vocals I’ve heard  in some time.

Many of the tunes are haunting homages to his mother, such as Plastic Rosary (Winter 1970) , the title track Navasota, and St. Theresa (his mothers name).  Take yourself to Navasota and get some pure Americana!

Andre Comeau/ River Rouge- Dark Horse Running

Category : Music

dark-horse1

Many of you have probably listened to the new podcast on our site called Americana Rock Mix hosted by Von.  The very first podcast I listened to from Von had several tunes by Andre Comeau, including one with his band River Rouge (named after an area in Southeast Michigan).  I loved the stuff and got a copy of River Rouge’s new cd, Dark Horse Running. To make it better (for me at least), I found out Andre was born and spent much of his life in my neck  of the woods in Michigan.  River Rouge consists of Andre Comeau, born in Detroit, Michigan; Jon Mesh, born in Brooklyn, New York; Randy Morris, born in Dallas, Texas and Sabrina Taylor, born in Nova Scotia, Canada one of Canada’s musical hotbeds.

If you watched MTV’s The Real World you might recognize Andre, who logged considerable time on the show.  He also has a part in a film I actually saw (I don’t get to see too many with young kids here) called The Mystic Masseur where he was a member of a string quartet. He also played in a number of Detroit area rock bands since before he could drive. The music on Dark Horse Running is a totally infectious mix of smart lyrics, catchy melodies and great musicianship.
andre
The opening cut begins with the haunting sound of the didgeridoo before launching into my favorite track on the disc Speak of the Devil which cleverly adds an echoing chorus from Ring Around The Rosie into the mix at the end.  Banjo and fiddle on this track give this cut a decidedly folk flavor.  Around the Block is a lively piano and acoustic guitar driven tune (both played by Andre).  The title track is another great tune with a very catchy acoustic guitar line and continually asks “Is anybody listening?”  Andre has a smooth voice perfect for these tunes, as well displayed on Something Blue.  For an idea of the band live, check out the one live cut on the disc, Ms Anne Thrope. If they come anywhere near me, I’m definitely checking them out, they sound great.

It sounds cliche, but there is not a bad tune in the bunch.  The disc ends with the whimsical tune Ten Reasons (I’ll Never Be a Groom) which shows Andre’s versatility in songwriting and his sense of humor. It’s a great folksy toe-tapper on which Sabrina Taylor gets to spotlight her voice, adding additional reasons why Andre will never be a groom.  If it means he would have to give up writing and performing music then I also hope he is never a groom!
