Forgive my rant but… I received an e-mail yesterday announcing the release of Shooter Jennings’ new Greatest Hit album entitled “Black Magik: the Best of Shooter Jennings and the .357’s“. I first thought this was some kind of joke but sure enough the e-mail contained a full bio and link to iTunes. First off, you can’t technically release a greatest hits album when you only have three full studio albums. Sure there isn’t a written rule but come on, really? The whole premise of greatest hits assumes hits over the span on decades, not four years. I enjoyed Shooter’s debut album “Put the O back in country” but everything since has been a disappointment for my tastes however in the new world of music, greatest hits mean nothing anymore. It is way to easy to pick your own personal greatest hits yourself. I’ll chalk this up as a marketing tactic to sell albums on as he joins the Warped Tour shows this summer. Thoughts?

the artist gets sick of the label – releases a “hits” record to fulfill the deal – then off to do independent work, or sign up with a different label
Agreed David. I can’t imagine Shooter himself said “I need a greatest hits album”. In a few years, Shooter will have a good size catalog and the time will be right. Then again, I go back to my point on Greatest Hit albums anyway given that iTunes lets you build you’re own
This is all about marketing and re-selling what any Shooter fan would already have purchased before.
Shooter had a live album come out a couple of years ago. Isn’t that the same as a “greatest hits?”
hello greatest hits . ?? he needs two more real albums to come out with greatest hits . but hey bobby goldsbro had about 4 different labels greatest hits . with 9 songs he never song before but covered to make it a greatest hits album .. . and his one hit honey . he should have called it songs i like and my one hit . lol. shooter should sing his only two cool songs . and a bunch of hank 3 covers and call it a greatest hits album .
I personally do not like Shooter’s music and can’t understand why XM/Sirius allows him to play the crap he does on the Outlaw Country channel. I think he’s living through his fathers image.
